HOW IT STARTED
It all began when my husband, Parker, and I temporarily moved to the Midwest. I previously had been working in clinical research at the largest healthcare system in Colorado, so the idea of not working for six months terrified me. In lieu of employment, I decided to lean into a hobby. Have you ever fallen into the black hole that is the Instagram Discovery Page? Same. I often found myself spending far too much time watching cake decorating videos, so one day I finally decided that I was going to give it a try.

I made a chocolate strawberry cake as a surprise for my husband on Valentine's Day. It was a MASSIVE four layer cake and I was so, incredibly proud of my work!

I was hooked after that first cake. I was constantly sifting through cake blogs for new recipes and decorating inspiration. I bought some smaller pans and decided to use my husband's coworkers as my guinea pigs. Every couple of weeks I would create something different and send it to work with my husband so he could report back with everyone's thoughts, criticisms and comments. I loved having a creative outlet and knowing my cakes were going to great people!

We finally moved to North Carolina that summer and my love for baking and decorating hadn't faded. I was gainfully employed again, but my need for a creative outlet on my own terms still persisted. I made a few cakes for birthdays here and there, which eventually led up to extra layers and icings accumulating in my freezer. I had no plans for my extra materials until one day when I had a sudden burst of inspiration - I had Oreo cake layers and peanut butter icing - a Parent Trap cake!

I was so pleased with the final product, but a three layer, six inch cake was simply too much for just me and my husband to enjoy. I brainstormed for several hours, trying to come up with the perfect recipient of one of my favorite cakes to date. I ended up turning to a Facebook group comprised of my fellow military spouses in the area, asking for people to nominate friends, family members or local organizations to receive a sweet treat!

I could not believe the response, my phone wouldn't stop buzzing! The kind words that people spoke of others made me see so much good in the world. Within an hour I had chosen the perfect family to surprise with my Parent Trap cake and I had also put together a list of people for my next several creations - I knew I was onto something!

So, if you've stumbled upon this page because I showed up at your door with the cake you didn't know you needed... someone in your life thinks you're pretty amazing, and I do too! "Cake it forward" by sending an email to me below and nominate someone you know to be a future recipient!
Baked with love,
